Preparing for Burning Man has been quite the experience. Let’s just say it’s like preparing for the unpreparable (Hannah). Vintage rabbit fur, faux camel-colored fur and gray shearling found at the Goodwill Bins were among the first items packed into my neon bins. Although I would never purchase new fur, I am all about vintage fur finds and faux fur that looks as real as it gets.

With fall right around the corner, shearling and fur popped up in all the editorial shoots these past couple of months. I especially love the way Vogue contributing editor, Marie-Amélie Sauvé, mixed in luxe brocades to accent voluminous fur jackets in Universal Coverage shot by Steven Meisel.

Feeling inspired by these stunning combinations of luxurious, worldly materials that can be worn on the street, as well as on the playa, I have decked out my old Minnetonka moccasin boots and my bike basket with faux-fur, morphing these basic pieces into creature-looking accessories. My gregarious friend, Hannah, whose bubbly laughter and go-getter attitude inspire all those around her, taught me the tricks of the trade for faux-fur embellishments. She and other Burners from around the globe have been adorning hoods, boots and pretty much anything you can think of, with fur long before the trend hit the runways. Check out my fabulous friend Molly’s blog, The Great Rucksack Revolution, for more inspiration and tales of her adventures, from Burning Man to the shores of Thailand. My friends truly are AMAZING!

Check back in a couple weeks for shots and stories straight from the playa! Here I go…

My parents gave me life, showed me unconditional love and let me spread my wings when I was ready to fly. I am so grateful to have these two amazing people in my life. I have been blessed with so much, and it all stems from these two. My parents taught me to work hard, to let go of suffering and to live life to the fullest. My heart swells with love when I think of my mom and dad. I love you, guys!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

With all this talk about the kitchen, I thought I’d share a yummy, delicious recipe with you! I used the strawberries J and I grew in our backyard, here on the Oregon coast. These brownies are to die for. Enjoy!

Strawberry Coconut Fudge Brownies (Gluten-free and vegan)

adapted from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar‘s Espresso Fudge Brownies

3 ounces semi-sweet, baking chocolate

5 tablespoons unrefined, extra-virgin coconut oil

2/3 cup sugar

1/3 non-dairy milk (I use nut milk)

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 1/2 – 3 tablespoons Dutch cocoa powder plus 3 tablespoons

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup gluten-free flour mix (recipe below)

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

a pinch of salt

1/2 cup strawberries, chopped (or 1/4 cup strawberry preserves)

a handful of dark chocolate chunks (if you like your brownies extra gooey…)

* I use all organic ingredients

1.) Lightly grease a square glass pan, or metal brownie pan, with some coconut oil. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

2.) Melt the squares of chocolate and the coconut oil together on your stovetop in a double broiler. (I just use a bowl in a saucepan of water because I don’t have a double broiler.) Stir until smooth, remove from stove, and stir in sugar to combine.

3.) In a liquid measuring cup, vigorously whisk together the non-dairy milk, cornstarch, 2 1/2 – 3 T. cocoa powder and vanilla. Stir this into the chocolate mixture until completely combined. Sift in the flour, baking powder, the remaining cocoa powder and salt, and fold into the chocolate mixture until moistened. Add the strawberries/preserves and the chocolate chunks, if desired. A few small lumps are okay; do not over mix. Spread batter smoothly in pan.

4.) Bake for 22 to 24 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the brownies comes out mostly clean. Place the pan on a wire rack to cool for at least 30 minutes. If possible, allow brownies to cool completely before serving.

Gluten-Free Flour Mix

yields more than necessary for recipe

1/4 cup coconut flour

1/3 white rice flour

1/3 cup millet flour

3 tablespoons tapioca flour

1 tablespoon ground flax seeds

1.) Mix together, and use as a 1:1 swap with regular all-purpose flour in cookie recipes.

The summer treats me so well! I enjoyed six blissful days at the Oregon Country Fair, surrounded by all the amazing Fair family. I bonded with new friends and reconnected with ones who’ve been away. The magic and love I experienced at that Fair this year will carry me through to the next year. I am looking forward to more summer festivals and small gatherings!

J and I shot these pictures out at the farm last week after having dinner with our great friend, Leighton Blackwell, the talented leather worker behind Bear Proof Designs. He designed and crafted this amazing backpack from scarp leather that includes adjustable shoulder straps with sheep-skin padding and a side cell-phone holder. This beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece carries anything you need, and it even has a separate compartment inside. I have been dying for a pair of Bear Proof custom moccasin boots. Hopefully, by the end of the summer…I will keep you posted!

| birthday cake from sweet life |

I celebrated my 24th birthday over the weekend with the best family of friends a girl could ask for. My actual birthday started with a gluten-free/vegan, cherry-vanilla pancake feast at 10pm, agave syrup, strawberry jam and all! J and I passed out in a food coma. The next day was spent basking in the sun, blowing bubbles and eating far too much birthday cake! Just the way a birthday should be. Over the weekend, J and I trekked up the road to our good friends, the Doyles’ house for the Summer Solstice Freakdown party. It was the most wonderful way I could imagine celebrating. The camp-out included an epic scavenger hunt, far too much Bulleit Burbon, two nights of incredible live music and never-ending delicious food homemade by the most amazing, warm-hearted people in the world. I am so blessed. I can’t wait to see what this next year has in store, and for next year’s Solstice Freakdown, to celebrate life blissfully.

Don’t worry. I’m not planning on getting married anytime soon. But when I do…I am using succulents in the centerpieces and bouquets. I love the earthy, natural look of succulents combined with glass and wood to create a centerpiece that is beautiful and re-useable. For her Palm Springs’ wedding, Kelly, over at Yes, Please, combined them with craspedia (the bright yellow balls) to create gorgeous centerpieces for the tables, and boutineers and bouquets for the bridal party. The pop of yellow is perfect for a summer wedding, and the twine closures enhance the earthy, natural look. For another option, I love succulents paired with deep purple peonies, or dahlias, and white ranunculus. Just head over to Style Me Pretty for as much inspiration as you could possible want. I could spend hours looking at all the creative, beautiful ideas people come up with for their weddings. Absolutely sublime.

Enjoy your weekend! Birthday post coming on Monday! xo.

I am obsessing over Vena Cava’s Resort 2011 collection. I especially love all the mesh and lace used throughout this collection. And how amazing is that overall-style jumpsuit?! I love the design duo’s (Vena Cava is the collaborative efforts of Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai) perfect combination of masculine and feminine in this collection. Just my style. This is my dream warm-weather wardrobe. I will definitely be making an investment when this collection hits stores. The only question…Which amazing look to choose? Which are your favorites?

Birthdays Past

| at Il Vegetariano in Firenze for my 21st birthday |

My birthday is next Thursday, which got me thinking about birthdays past and how lucky I have been in my life. I went through my archive of photos and found these photos from my past 3 birthdays. One spent in Firenze, Italia. One spent in Eugene, Oregon. And the other spent in Portland, Oregon. In typical fashion, I will be adding a new birthday location to the list. Yachats, Oregon. Still deciding what to wear…?! No matter what I decide to put on, I will be surrounded by the loves of my life, probably eating an absurd amount of sugar. In typical Ali fashion.
