Preparing for Burning Man has been quite the experience. Let’s just say it’s like preparing for the unpreparable (Hannah). Vintage rabbit fur, faux camel-colored fur and gray shearling found at the Goodwill Bins were among the first items packed into my neon bins. Although I would never purchase new fur, I am all about vintage fur finds and faux fur that looks as real as it gets.
With fall right around the corner, shearling and fur popped up in all the editorial shoots these past couple of months. I especially love the way Vogue contributing editor, Marie-Amélie Sauvé, mixed in luxe brocades to accent voluminous fur jackets in Universal Coverage shot by Steven Meisel.
Feeling inspired by these stunning combinations of luxurious, worldly materials that can be worn on the street, as well as on the playa, I have decked out my old Minnetonka moccasin boots and my bike basket with faux-fur, morphing these basic pieces into creature-looking accessories. My gregarious friend, Hannah, whose bubbly laughter and go-getter attitude inspire all those around her, taught me the tricks of the trade for faux-fur embellishments. She and other Burners from around the globe have been adorning hoods, boots and pretty much anything you can think of, with fur long before the trend hit the runways. Check out my fabulous friend Molly’s blog, The Great Rucksack Revolution, for more inspiration and tales of her adventures, from Burning Man to the shores of Thailand. My friends truly are AMAZING!
Check back in a couple weeks for shots and stories straight from the playa! Here I go…
